CLASS-8
VERTICAL ADDITION OF ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION

Vertical Addition of algebraic expression –

Steps.1) Write the subtrahend (that is, the expression to be added) below the minuend (that is, the expression from which to subtract) in such a way that the like terms are in the same column.

Steps.2) Change the sign of each term of the subtrahend.

Steps.3) Then we have to add the expression.

Example.1) Add 9x² + 5x – 5, 7x² - 9x + 12, and 2x² + 15x – 6

Answer)      9x² + 5x – 5

               7x² - 9x + 12

           +   2x² + 15x – 6

        ----------------------

              18x² + 11x + 1                (Ans.)

Example.2)  Add 5xᶟ - 10x² + 5x – 5, - 8xᶟ + 10x² - 9x + 12, and - 8x² + 15x – 6

Answer)      5xᶟ - 10x² - 5x + 5

            - 8xᶟ + 10x² - 9x + 12

                  -  8x² + 15x – 6

         ------------------------

            - 3xᶟ - 8x² + x + 11              (Ans.)

Example.3)  Add 8x⁴- 15xᶟ + 12x² + 10x – 5, 9xᶟ - 12x² + 12x + 20,  15x⁴ - 8xᶟ + 15x – 6, and 4x⁴ + 5xᶟ + 10x²- 8x

Answer)       8x⁴ - 15xᶟ + 12x² + 10x – 5

                       9xᶟ - 12x² + 12x + 20

               15x⁴ - 8xᶟ         + 15x – 6

                4x⁴ + 5xᶟ + 10x² - 8x

          --------------------------------

               27x⁴ - 9xᶟ + 10x² + 29x + 9                (Ans.)
