POWERS

POWERS

As we all know and discussed earlier that, when a number multiplied by itself repeatedly then the number of repetitions is called a Power or Exponential of the number. The number is called the ‘Base’ of the power and the number of times it is multiplied is called the ‘Exponent’ or ‘Index’.

The product a x a should be written as a² (here ‘a’ is multiplied by 2 times ) is a power of ‘a’, here the base is ‘a’ and the index is 2. Similarly b x b x b x b should be written as b⁴ and here ‘b’ is the base and 4 is the power or index of ‘b’ because ‘b’ is multiplied by 4 times.

For your better understanding, we are giving some example below

7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 = 7⁵, where 7 is the base and 5 is the index or power of 7

9 x 9 x 9 x 9 x 9 x 9 = 9⁶, where 9 is the base and 6 is the index or power of 9
