All the laws of addition and multiplication of numbers are valid for operations on literals, such as –
1) x + y = y + x ( commutative law of addition )
2) xy = yx ( commutative law of multiplication )
3) x + ( y + z ) = ( x + y ) + z ( associative law of addition )
4) x . (yz) = ( xy ) . z ( associative law of multiplication )
5) x ( y + z ) = xy + xz ( distributive law )
