CLASS-7
TYPES OF FRACTION

Fraction

As we all know that, in any fraction such as X / Y, the dividend ‘X’ is considered as “Numerator” and ‘Y’ is considered as “Denominator” and as an example, if 5/8 is a fraction then 5 is a “Numerator” and 8 is a “Denominator”.

On the other way, if I cut fruit into 6 pieces and I have taken 1 piece from 6 pieces, then it can be written as I have taken 1/6 of the whole part of the fruit.

There are some type of fraction are discussed and mention below –

a) Common Fraction

The numerator and denominator are integers in a common fraction

   4         7          11

------, ------- , -------  are common Or simple fraction.

  15        25          70

b) Complex Fraction

If in a fraction, either denominator or numerator or both the denominator and numerator contains fraction is called complex fraction –

   2/3         7/11        13

--------, --------, --------   are some complex fraction

   5/7          15        9/17

c) Proper Fraction

If in any fraction, the numerator is less than denominator then the fraction is called a proper fraction

    2          5         11

-------, -------, -------  are some proper fraction

    7         12         25

d) Improper Fraction

If in any fraction, the numerator is greater than denominator then the fraction is called an improper fraction

   11         21         47

-------, -------, --------  are some improper fraction.

    8         12         31

e) Mixed Fraction -

If in any fraction, an integer together with a proper fraction is called a mixed fraction.

     5            7            3

1 ------ , 3 ------ , 2 -------  are called mixed fraction

     7            11           5

Mix Fraction can be converted into an improper fraction as follows –

Integral Part X Denominator of the Proper Fraction +                              Numerator of the Proper fraction

Mixed Fraction = ---------------------------------------------                                                                                                                            Denominator

          5           1 X 7 + 5            12

     1 ------  = -------------  = --------

          7               7                  7

      7          3 X 11 + 7           40

 3 ------ = --------------  = -------

      11             11                11

      3          2 X 5 + 3         13

2 ------- = ------------ = -------

      5              5               5

                                                                                                                                                    Reminder

Mixed Fraction= Quotient in (Numerator/Denominator) + --------------

                                                                 Denominator

If, there are quotient = 4, Reminder =  3,  Denominator = 5,

                                3

then Mix Fraction =  4 + -------

                                5

                                                                                                                 3

      Mix Fraction =   4 -------

                               5
