HORIZONTAL ADDITION OF ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION

ADDITION OF ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION

There are two ways of adding algebraic expression – the horizontal method and the column method.

Horizontal method –

Suppose there are some algebraic expressions which is to be like to add, and the algebraic expressions are –

1) Add 3a + 4b – 3c,  -4a + 3b – 7c,  5a – 4b + 8c

Step.-1) connect all the expression by the positive sign

   (3a + 4b – 3c) + (-4a + 3b – 7c) + ( 5a – 4b + 8c )

Step.-2) collect the like terms in groups

     =  ( 3a – 4a + 5a ) + ( 4b + 3b – 4b ) + ( -3c – 7c + 8c )

Step.-3) add the terms in each group

     =  ( 3 – 4 + 5 ) a + ( 4 + 3 – 4 ) b + ( -3 – 7 + 8 ) c

Step.- 4) write the unlike terms along with their signs to form an algebraic expression.

           =    4a + 3b – 2c  (Ans.)

2) Add 5a – 6b + 5c,  7a + 5b + 4c,  8a – 5b – 6c.

Step.-1) connect all the expression by the positive sign

   (5a – 6b + 5c) + (7a + 5b + 4c ) + (8a – 5b – 6c)

Step.-2) collect the like terms in groups

     =  ( 5a + 7a + 8a ) + ( -6b + 5b – 5b ) + ( 5c + 4c – 6 c )

Step.-3) add the terms in each group

     =  ( 5 + 7 + 8 ) a + ( -6 + 5 – 5 ) b + ( 5 + 4 - 6 ) c

Step.-4) write the unlike terms along with their signs to form an algebraic expression.

           =    20a - 6b + 3c    (Ans.)
