TYPES OF FRACTION

TYPES OF FRACTION -

Fractions are numbers that represent a part of a whole. They consist of two main components: a numerator and a denominator. The numerator is the top number, representing the part of the whole, and the denominator is the bottom number, indicating the total number of equal parts the whole is divided into. There are several types of fractions:

  1. Proper Fraction:- A proper fraction is a fraction where the numerator is less than the denominator. For example, 1/3, 2/5, and 7/8 are proper fractions.
  2. Improper Fraction:- An improper fraction is a fraction where the numerator is equal to or greater than the denominator. For example, 5/4, 9/7, and 11/11 are improper fractions.
  3. Equivalent Fractions:- Equivalent fractions are fractions that represent the same portion of a whole, but their numerators and denominators may be different. For example, 1/2, 2/4, and 3/6 are equivalent fractions.
  4. Like Fractions:- Like fractions are fractions that have the same denominators. For example, 1/5 and 3/5 are like fractions.
  5. Unlike Fractions:- Unlike fractions are fractions that have different denominators. For example, 1/4 and 2/3 are unlike fractions.
  6. Reciprocal or Multiplicative Inverse:- The reciprocal of a fraction is obtained by interchanging the numerator and denominator. The reciprocal of a/b is b/a. For example, the reciprocal of 2/3 is 3/2.
  7. Unit Fraction:- A unit fraction is a fraction where the numerator is 1. For example, 1/5, 1/2, and 1/7 are unit fractions.
  8. Zero Fraction:- A zero fraction is a fraction with a numerator of 0, which results in the fraction being equal to 0. For example, 0/7, 0/2, and 0/9 are zero fractions.
  9. Proper Unit Fraction:- A proper unit fraction is a fraction where the numerator is 1, and the denominator is greater than 1. For example, 1/2, 1/3, and 1/8 are proper unit fractions.

 10. Mixed Fraction:- A mixed fraction is a combination of a whole number and a proper fraction. It is typically represented as a whole number and a proper fraction separated by a plus sign.

 For example, 3 ------, 2 ------, and 5 ------ are mixed fractions.

These are some of the common types of fractions you may come across in mathematics. Fractions play a fundamental role in various mathematical operations and applications, including arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.
