CLASS-5
MEASUREMENT OF LENGTH

Measurement Of Length -

Meter (m) is the standard unit for measuring length. Kilometer (km) is the commonly used unit for measuring larger lengths such as distance between two cities.

                             1 km = 1000 m

Centimeter (cm) is the commonly used unit for measuring small lengths such as length of a pencil.

                              1 m = 100 cm

Further, kilometer (km), hectometer (hm) and decameter (dam) are other units of length bigger than metre (m).

                             1 dam = 10 m

                             1 hm = 100 m

                             1 km = 1000 m

Similarly, decimeter (dm), centimeter (cm) and millimeter (mm) are the units of length smaller than meter (m).

                             1 m = 10 dm

                             1 m = 100 cm

                             1 m = 1000 mm

Conversion of Units of Length -

To convert a lower unit into a higher unit [like decimetre (dm) to metre (m), centimetre (cm) to metre (m), etc.], we have to divide by 10 or 100 or 1000 etc. and to convert a higher unit into a lower unit [like kilometre (km) to metre (m), hectometre (hm) to metre (m), etc.], we have to multiply by 10 or 100 or 1000 etc. We also know that division by 10, 100, 1000, etc. is done by shifting the decimal point to the left of the given number and multiplication by 10, 100, 1000, etc. is done by shifting the decimal point to the right of the given number.

Conversion of units of Length is shown as follows:
