CLASS-5
DIVISION OF FRACTION

DIVISION OF FRACTION -

To divide fractions, you need to follow these steps:

  1. Keep the first fraction as is.
  2. Flip the second fraction (invert it), swapping its numerator and denominator.
  3. Multiply the first fraction by the inverted second fraction.
  4. Simplify the resulting fraction by reducing it to its lowest terms, if possible.

For example, let's say we want to divide 2/3 by 4/5 :-

  1. 2/3 ÷ 4/5 = 2/3 x 5/4
  2. The second fraction, 4/5, becomes 5/4 when inverted.
  3. 2/3 x 5/4 = (2 x 5) / (3 x 4) = 10/12
  4. We can simplify 10/12 by dividing both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor, which is 2. This gives us 5/6 as the final answer.

So, 2/3 ÷ 4/5 = 5/6.

So, we follow the following rules for division:

1) Replace the divisor by its reciprocal.

2) Change the division sign (÷) to multiplication sign (×).

3) Follow the process of multiplication of fractions.

Example.1)   -------- ÷ --------

                   25           35

                   12           16

Ans.)   -------- ÷ --------

            25           35

[Flip the second fraction (invert it) 16/35, swapping its numerator and denominator and turns into 35/16.]

       12           35

       25           16

[12 and 16 have the common factor 4 & 35 & 25 have a common factor 5]

          12 ÷ 4           35 ÷ 5

=  ----------- X -----------

       25 ÷ 5           16 ÷ 4
