# CLASS-5SUBTRACTION OF DECIMAL FRACTION

Subtraction Of Decimal Fractions -

To subtract decimal fractions, we follow the rules given below :-

1)   Write the numbers in column form.

2)   Decimal points should come in one column.

3)   There should be the same number of digits after the decimal point in each number. [If required put zeroes at the extreme right of the decimal point as it does not change the value of the number.]

4)   Then subtract.

Another way of understanding for subtraction -

To subtract decimal fractions, you can follow these steps :-

1. Align the decimal points of the numbers.
2. If necessary, add zeros to the right of the decimal point to make sure both numbers have the same number of decimal places.
3. Subtract the digits in each column, starting from the rightmost column.
4. If the digit in the subtrahend (the number being subtracted) is larger than the corresponding digit in the minuend (the number being subtracted from), borrow from the left by reducing the digit in the next column by 1.
5. Continue subtracting the digits in each column, borrowing if necessary, until you reach the leftmost column.
6. Write the decimal point in the difference directly below the decimal points of the numbers being subtracted.

1)  Subtract the following :-

a) 0.36 - 0.2431

Ans.)

0      .      3      6      0      0

-   0      .      2     4       3      1

-------------------------------------

0      .      1      1      6      9

b) 11.0061 - 9.7

Ans.)

1   1    .    0   0   6   1

-      9    .    7   0   0   0

-----------------------------

1    .    3   0   6    1

c) 0.36 - 0.2431

0      .     3     6     0      0

- 0      .     2     4     3      1

------------------------------------

0      .     1     1     6      9

d) 11.0061 - 9.7

1   1    .    0    0    6     1

-      9    .    7    0    0     0

----------------------------------

1    .    3    0    6     1
