SUBTRACTION OF MIX FRACTION WITH DIFFERENT DENOMINATOR

SUBTRACTION OF MIX FRACTION WITH DIFFERENT DENOMINATOR -

Addition of mixed fraction with different denominator is near to similar of addition of mixed fraction with same denominator except one or two steps. Process of addition of mix fraction with different denominator is described below -

Process of Subtraction of Mix-Fraction with Different Denominator -

Step.1) Convert from mix fraction to improper fractions.

Step.2) Find LCM of denominator of given fraction

Step.3) Change both the fractions to equivalent fractions with common denominators.

Step.4) Make subtraction of given fraction.

Step.5) Reduce to lowest term if possible.

Step.6) Convert the improper fraction to mixed number as the denominator is smaller than the numerator.

There are some examples are given below for your better understanding -

                                            1          3

Example.1)  Subtract  2----- - 1-----

                                            3          4

Ans.)       1          3

         2----- - 1-----

             3          4

         7            7

=  ------- - -------    Step.1) Convert from mix fraction to improper

       3            4                 fractions.

      (7 X 4) - (7 X 3)

= -------------------  Step.2) Find LCM of denominator of given

             12                       fraction. LCM of 3 & 4 is 12.

     (28 - 21)

= ------------        Step.4) Make subtraction of given fraction.

        12

       7

= --------            Step.5) Reduce to lowest term if possible.

      12

So, the required answer is 7/12    (Ans.)

                                          5          3

Example.2) Subtract  ------ - ------

                                         24        16

Ans.)     5            3

       ------- - -------

          24          16

Step.1) Find LCM of denominator of given fraction.

fraction

LCM of denominator 24, and 16 is 48.

Step.2) Change both the fractions to equivalent fractions with common denominators.

      5             5 X 2            10

 --------- = ----------- = ---------

     24            24 X 2           48

     3             3 X 3             9

--------- = ------------ = --------

    16            16 X 3            48

          10             9

      --------- - --------

          48            48

Step.3) Subtract the equivalent fractions. When we add or subtract fractions with same denominator, we just add or subtract the numerators and keep the denominator same.

           (10 - 9)

     =  ------------

              48

             1

     =  --------

            48

1/48 is a proper fraction i.e denominator is greater than numerator. So, this is the answer.   (Ans.)
