FORMATION OF GREATEST & SMALLEST NUMBERS

FORMATION OF GREATEST & SMALLEST NUMBERS -

To understand the formation of greatest and smallest number is very crucial for finding greatest and smallest number also. Without understanding this we will not be able to even recognise the greatest and smallest number, not only that we will not be able to arrange and series of numbers in ascending and descending order.

There are two aspects of finding the greatest and smallest number,

A) If the digits of the given number are not repeated,

B) If the digits of the given number are repeated.

Above mentioned both the conditions we will be discussing below.

(A) When the digits are not repeated -

Example : Form the greatest and the smallest number using all the digits 3,2,0,5,6,1

[For smallest number, we write ‘0’ (zero) in the second place from the left]

(B) When the digits are repeated -

Example : Form the greatest and the smallest number of 6 digits using

(a) 3,2,5                   (b) 0,3,7,8

Q. (a) 3,2,5

Explanation for Greatest: -

1. The smallest digit is to be written in one’s column and then proceed towards left in the table.

2. Since there is no digit greater than 5, so we repeat 5 under other columns.

Explanation for Smallest: -

1. The greatest digit is to be written in one’s column and then proceed towards left in the table.

2. Since 2 is the smallest digit, repeat 2 under the other columns.

Q. (b) 0,3,7,8
