CONCEPT OF FINDING FACTORS

CONCEPT OF FACTORS -

A number is a factor of a given number if it divides that number exactly, without any remainder.

PROPERTIES OF FACTORS :-

(1) 1 is a factor of each number.

(2) Every number is a factor of itself.

(3) A factor of a number is either less than or equal to the number.

     6 x 7 = 42

=>  42 ÷ 6 = 7

=>  42 ÷ 7 = 6

6 and 7 are divisors of 42 as they divide 42 without any remainder.

6 and 7 are called the factors of 42.

A factor is a number which divides a given number exactly.

9 x 7 = 63  7 and 9 are the factors of 63.

5 x 9 = 45;   5 and 9 are the factors of 45.

Example.1)   Is 7 a factor of 521 ?

Ans.)

                 7 )  521  ( 74

                 49

              ________

                  31

                  28

               _______

                   3

So,  7 is not a factor of 521 since the remainder is not 0.      (Ans.)

Example.2)    Is 8 a factor of 368 ?

Ans.)

                 8 )  368  ( 46

                      32

                  ________

                       48

                       48

                    _______

                        0

So, 8 is a factor of 368 since the remainder is 0.      (Ans.)
