CLASS-4
DECIMAL NUMBER - MIXED NUMBER IN DECIMALS

MIXED NUMBERS IN DECIMALS -

In this part we will learn, how to convert mixed number into decimal. There are some examples are given below for your better understanding.

Example.1) We have to add 1, 1, and 4/10, then will turn into decimal

               4

  1 + 1 + ------- = 2 ones + 4 tenths

              10

                              4          24

                     =  2 ------ = ------- =  2.4

                             10         10

In 2.4, the integral part (the part written before decimal point) is 2 and the decimal part (the part written after the decimal point) is 4.

              TENS         ONES         Dots        TENTHS

                           2             .              4

                                            24

on the other way, in the mix fraction ------, in denominator 10 there is

                                            10

one zero (0), so decimal point or dot (.) will move one step left forward in numerator and result would be 2.4.

NOTE: The digits after the decimal point are read one by one. (like 2.4 is read as two point four. and not as five point seventy eight)

➢        2.4 can be read as    i) two and four tenths

                                   ii) two point four

Similarly -

Example.2) We have to add 3, 2, and 17/100, then will turn into decimal

              17

  3 + 2 + ------- = 5 ones + 1 tenths + 7 hundredths

             100

                             17         517

                     =  5 ------ = ------- =  5.17

                            100        100

In 5.17, the integral part (the part written before decimal point) is 5 and the decimal part (the part written after the decimal point) is 17.

    TENS         ONES         Dots        TENTHS      HUNDREDTHS

                      5             .              1                7

                                            517

on the other way, in the mix fraction -------, in denominator 100 there

                                            100

are two zeros (0), so decimal point or dot (.) will move two steps left forward in numerator and result would be 5.17.

NOTE: The digits after the decimal point are read one by one. (like 5.17 is read as five point one seven, and not as five point seventeen)

➢       5.17 can be read as    i) five and one tenths seven hundredths

                                   ii) five point one seven

Similarly -

Example.3) We have to add 70, 6, and 345/1000, then will turn into decimal

               345

  70 + 6 + ------- = 7 tens + 6 ones + 3 tenths + 4 hundredths + 5

              1000

thousandths.

                               345         76345

                     =  76 -------- = -------- =  76.345

                              1000         1000

In 76.345, the integral part (the part written before decimal point) is 76 and the decimal part (the part written after the decimal point) is 345.

TENS    ONES     Dots    TENTHS   HUNDREDTHS  THOUSANDTHS

  7         6          .          3             4                  5

                                            76345

on the other way, in the mix fraction --------, in denominator 1000

                                            1000

there are three zeros (0), so decimal point or dot (.) will move three steps left forward in numerator and result would be 76.345.

NOTE: The digits after the decimal point are read one by one. (like 76.345 is read as seventy six point three four five, and not as seventy six point three hundred forty five)

➢    76.345 can be read as -

  i) seven tens six ones and three tenths four hundredths five thousandths.

ii) seventy six point three four five.
