CLASS-2
THREE DIGIT SUBTRACTION WITH REGROUPING

THREE DIGIT SUBTRACTION WITH REGROUPING

Example.1)  534 - 275 = ?

METHOD

Step 1. – Subtract the ‘Ones’

But, 4 ‘Ones’ <  5 ‘Ones’

There are not enough ‘Ones’, so, Re-group.

4 Ones 3 Tens 5 Hundreds, so add/place 1 before 4 ‘Ones’ , now the number stands 14 and then subtract  5 Ones from 14 Ones.

14 ‘Ones’ – 5 ‘Ones’ = 9 ‘Ones’

Write 9 in the ‘Ones’ column

Step 2. – In Step 1. We have placed/added 1 before 4

‘Ones’ and Now, to balance subtract 1

from 3 ‘Tens’ and then the number stands at 2 ‘Tens’

Now, subtract 7 Tens from 2 Tens , but the same problem arise, i.e. 2 ‘Tens’ <  7 ‘Tens’.

There are not enough ‘Tens’, so, Re-group, add/place

1 before 2 Tens and the numbers stands at 12 Tens.

Now, subtract  7 ‘Tens’ from ‘12’ Tens.

           12 ‘Tens’  - 7 ‘Tens’ = 5 ‘Tens’

Write  5 in the ‘Tens’ column .

Step 3. – In Step2. We have placed/added 1 before

2 ‘Tens’ and now to balance subtract 1 from 5 ‘Hundreds’ and the number stands at 4 ‘Hundreds’.

Now, subtract 2 ‘Hundreds’ from 4 ‘Hundreds’.

Write 2 in the Hundreds column

So, the answer is 259     (Ans.)

Example.2)  343 - 148 = ?

METHOD

Step 1.–  Subtract the ‘Ones’

But, 3 ‘Ones’ < 8 ‘Ones’

There are not enough ‘Ones’, so, Re-group 3 Ones 4 Tens 3 Hundreds, so add/place 1 before 3 ‘Ones’ , now the number stands 13 and then subtract  8 Ones from 13 Ones.

 13 ‘Ones’ – 8 ‘Ones’ = 5 ‘Ones’

Write 5 in the ‘Ones’ column

Step 2. – In Step 1. We have placed/added 1 before 3 ‘Ones’ and Now, to balance subtract 1 from 4 ‘Tens’ and then the number stands at 3 ‘Tens’ Now, subtract 4 Tens from 3 Tens , but the same problem  arise, i.e. 3 ‘Tens’ <  4 ‘Tens’.

There are not enough ‘Tens’, so, Re-group, add/place 1 before 3 Tens and the numbers stands at 13 Tens.

Now, subtract  4 ‘Tens’ from ‘13’ Tens. 13 ‘Tens’ - 4 ‘Tens’ = 9 ‘Tens’

Write 9 in the ‘Tens’ column .

Step 3. – In Step2. We have placed/added 1 before 3 ‘Tens’ and now to balance subtract 1 from 3 ‘Hundreds’ and the number stands at 2 ‘Hundreds’.

Now, subtract 1 ‘Hundred’ from 2 ‘Hundreds’.

2 Hundreds – 1 Hundreds = 1 Hundreds

Write 1 in the Hundreds column

So, the answer is 195    (Ans.)

Example.3)  462 - 254 = ?

METHOD

Step 1. – Subtract the ‘Ones’

But, 2 ‘Ones’ <  4 ‘Ones’

There are not enough ‘Ones’, so, Re-group 4 Ones 6 Tens 4 Hundreds, so add/place 1 before 2 ‘Ones’ , now the number

stands 12 and then subtract 4 Ones from 12 Ones.

 12 ‘Ones’ – 4 ‘Ones’ = 8 ‘Ones’

Write 8 in the ‘Ones’ column

Step 2.– In Step 1. We have placed/added 1 before 2 ‘Ones’ and Now, to balance subtract 1 from 6 ‘Tens’ and then the number stands at 5 ‘Tens’. Now, subtract 5 Tens from 5 Tens,

 5 Tens – 5 Tens = 0 Ten,

Write ‘0’ in the ‘Tens’ column.

Step 3.– Subtract the ‘Hundreds’

Now, subtract 2 ‘Hundred’ from 4 ‘Hundreds’.

4 Hundreds – 2 Hundreds = 2 Hundreds

Write 2 in the ‘Hundreds’ column

So, the answer is 208     (Ans.)
