LINEAR SUBTRACTION WITH REGROUPING

LINEAR SUBTRACTION WITH REGROUPING OF NUMBERS

Q.1)  36 - 24 = ?

Ans.)   36 =  3 Tens + 6 Ones.

        24 =  2 Tens + 4 Ones.

        Subtract Ones = 6 Ones - 4 Ones = 2 Ones.

        Subtract Tens =  3 Tens - 2 Tens = 1 Ten.

 So, the number is 1 Ten + 2 Ones = 12

       So, 36 - 24 = 12        (Ans.)

Q.2)  32 - 23 = ?

Ans.)  We have to subtract, 23 from 32

          32 =  3 Tens + 2 Ones.

          23 =  2 Tens + 3 Ones.

        Subtract Ones = 2 Ones - 3 Ones, but we can observe that 2 is smaller than 3, so this is not possible to subtract a number from a smaller number. Now to subtract we will put 1 before 2 Ones and we will consider as 12 Ones and to balance we will subtract 1 from 3 tens (32) and obtained => 32 =  3 Tens + 2 Ones = 2 Tens + 12 Ones

         32 =  2 Tens + 12 Ones.

         23 =  2 Tens + 3 Ones.

       Now, Subtract Ones =  12 Ones – 3 Ones = 9 Ones

              Subtract Tens =  2 Tens - 2 Tens = 0 Ten.

So, the number is  0 Ten + 9 Ones =  09 =  9

                     32 - 23 =  9       (Ans.)

Q.3)   77 - 49 = ?

Ans.)  We have to subtract, 49 from 77

        77 =  7 Tens + 7 Ones.

        49 =  4 Tens + 9 Ones.

        Subtract Ones = 7 Ones - 9 Ones, but we can observe that 7 is smaller than 9, so this is not possible to subtract a number from a smaller number. Now to subtract we will put 1 before 7 Ones and we will consider as 17 Ones and to balance we will subtract 1 from 7 tens (77) and obtained => 77 =  7 Tens + 7 Ones = 6 Tens + 17 Ones

        77 =  6 Tens + 17 Ones.

        49 =  4 Tens + 9 Ones.

       Now, Subtract Ones = 17 Ones – 9 Ones = 8 Ones

             Subtract Tens =  6 Tens - 4 Tens = 2 Tens.

So, the number is 2 Tens + 8 Ones = 28

           77 - 49 = 28        (Ans.)

Q.4)   51 - 43 = ?

Ans.) We have to subtract, 43 from 51

           51 =  5 Tens + 1 One.

           43 =  4 Tens + 3 Ones.

     Subtract Ones = 1 One - 3 Ones, but we can observe that 1 is smaller than 3, so this is not possible to subtract a number from a smaller number. Now to subtract we will put 1 before 1 Ones and we will consider as 11 Ones and to balance we will subtract 1 from 5 tens (51) and obtained => 51 =  5 Tens + 1 Ones = 4 Tens + 11 Ones

           51 =  4 Tens + 11 Ones.

           43 =  4 Tens + 3 Ones.

  Now, Subtract Ones = 11 Ones – 3 Ones = 8 Ones

        Subtract Tens =  4 Tens - 4 Tens = 0 Ten.

So, the number is 0 Ten + 8 Ones = 08 = 8

                      51 - 43 = 8        (Ans.)

Q.5)   62 - 28 = ?

Ans.)   62 =  6 Tens + 2 Ones.

        28 =  2 Tens + 8 Ones.

        Subtract Ones = 2 Ones - 8 Ones, but we can observe that 2 is smaller than 8, so this is not possible to subtract a number from a smaller number. Now to subtract we will put 1 before 2 Ones and we will consider as 12 Ones and to balance we will subtract 1 from 6 tens (62) and obtained => 62 =  6 Tens + 2 Ones = 5 Tens + 12 Ones

            62 =  5 Tens + 12 Ones.

        28 =  2 Tens + 8 Ones.

    Now, Subtract Ones  =  12 Ones – 8 Ones = 4 Ones

         Subtract Tens =  5 Tens - 2 Tens = 3 Tens.

So, the number is  3 Tens + 4 Ones = 34

             62 - 28 = 34          (Ans.)
