CLASS-2
EXPANDED FORM OF NUMBERS

Expanded form of Numbers

The expanded form of a number is given by the sum of the place values of its digits, in the hundreds, tens, and ones places.

1) Consider the number 862. Arrange the digits in a place value chart as shown below –

From the above given table –

 Value of 2 at ones place is 2 X 1 = 2

Value of 6 at Tens place is 6 X 10 = 60

Value of 8 at Hundreds place is 8 X 100 = 800

So, expanded form of 862 is = 800 + 60 + 2 = 862      (Ans.)

2) Consider the number 537. Arrange the digits in a place value chart as shown below –

From the above given table –

Value of 7 at ones place is 7 X 1 = 7

Value of 3 at Tens place is 3 X 10 = 30

Value of 5 at Hundreds place is 5 X 100 = 500

So, expanded form of 537 is = 500 + 30 + 7 = 537   (Ans.)

3)  Consider the number 749. Arrange the digits in a place value chart as shown below –

From the above given table –

 Value of 9 at ones place is 9 X 1 = 9

Value of 4 at Tens place is 4 X 10 = 40

Value of 7 at Hundreds place is 7 X 100 = 700

So, expanded form of 749 is = 700 + 40 + 9 = 749  (Ans.)

4)  Consider the number 974. Arrange the digits in a place value chart as shown below –

From the above given table –

Value of 4 at ones place is 4 X 1 = 4

Value of 7 at Tens place is 7 X 10 = 70

Value of 9 at Hundreds place is 9 X 100 = 900

So, expanded form of 974 is = 900 + 70 + 4 = 974    (Ans.)

5)  Consider the number 628. Arrange the digits in a place value chart as shown below –

From the above given table –

Value of 8 at ones place is 8 X 1 = 8

Value of 2 at Tens place is 2 X 10 = 20

Value of 6 at Hundreds place is 6 X 100 = 600

So, expanded form of 628 is = 600 + 20 + 8 = 628   (Ans.)
